It seems like only yesterday when we were watching Italy lift the European Championship trophy after defeating England at Wembley, but the next one is just around the corner.

Euro 2024 will kick off on June 14th, with millions of football fans from across Europe descending on Germany for the 17th iteration of this UEFA competition. To get you in the mood and keep you informed throughout, we’ve put together a Euro 2024 betting guide, covering everything from the teams and groups to the games and players. You can even collect some Euro 2024 betting offers on the way.

So, stay sharp, keep your eyes peeled for those Euro 2024 betting promotions, and let’s look at what we can expect from this summer’s blockbuster football tournament!

History of the European Championships

The UEFA European Football Championships, or just “Euros”, was first held in 1960, becoming the first major pan-European international football tournament. Although it’s now a mainstay on the football calendar, it wasn’t as widely welcomed back then, with England, Italy, and a few other major countries voting against its creation.

The tournament was held in France and saw 17 teams enter, with 4 making it to the finals in France, and the Soviet Union triumphing. Spain hosted and won the next one and Italy repeated the feat 4 years later. By this time, the continent was beginning to get behind the tournament and it expanded to 8 teams in 1990 before jumping to 16 in time for Euro 1996 in England.

Another couple of groups were added in 2016, making up 24 teams in total.

The Format

The tournament’s 24 teams will play in 6 groups of 4 teams:

  • 3 points for a win. 1 for a draw
  • Everyone plays each other once
  • All games are played in pre-selected German stadiums
  • With the exception of the opening day, there are at least 2 games per day during the group stage

The top two teams in each group advance to a knockout stage along with 4 of the highest-ranked third-place finishers.

The third-place finishers rule means that group winners don’t always play runners-up in the first game of the Round of 16. Most winners are drawn against qualifying third-place finishers while many runners-up play each other.

If you’re doing your Euro 2024 betting analysis, there are a few key dates to keep in mind:

  • June 14th: The opening ceremony, followed by the opening game: Germany vs Scotland.
  • June 15th: The first time we see the reigning champions in action and the start of the Group of Death: Italy vs Albania and Spain vs Croatia.
  • 23rd June: The final round of group games begins.
  • 29th June: The start of the knockout rounds begins with the runner-up of Group A vs the runner-up of Group B.
  • 5th and 6th of July: The quarterfinals.
  • 9th and 10th of July: The semi-finals.
  • 14th July: The final

As always, there is no third-place playoff at Euro 2024.

The Groups and Layout

The Groups and Layout

Many Euro 2024 betting specials revolve around the group stage—who will win, who will qualify, who will finish bottom, who will score the most points? It’s also where the tournament’s best strikers get a chance to build their tallies, as there is usually at least one underdog with a weak defence that lets them run riot.

So, if you have your eye on Euro 2024 top scorer betting or even just some general Euro 2024 group stage betting, this is where the action is.

Group A

If you're looking for some good Euro 2024 odds on a potential dark horse, it's worth looking at Hungary. Switzerland are always a good shout as well. Both of these teams will fancy their chances of qualifying from the group, not only because they are fairly evenly balanced, but they will also rate their chances of beating Germany, a team that have struggled of late.

Germany will still begin the tournament as favourites, and you'd expect them to top the group, but you only need to look back at their capitulation during the 2022 and 2018 World Cups to realise that anything can happen.

  • Germany: As the hosts of Euro 2024, Germany didn’t need to qualify and spent the qualification period playing friendlies. They have been inconsistent at best and very worrying at worst, with losses to Poland, Colombia, Japan, and Austria, but wins against France and the Netherlands.
  • Scotland: Despite some poor showings in recent friendlies, including a heavy loss against the Netherlands and a home loss to Northern Ireland, Scotland cruised to second place in their group. They finished ahead of both Norway and Georgia, with only 4 points separating them from group winners Spain.
  • Hungary: The Hungarians didn’t lose a single game in qualifying and finished top. They also floored some big teams in 2022, including both Germany and England. This is a team you should never write off.
  • Switzerland: Although they were the favourite to top their group in qualifying, Switzerland were bettered by an unbeaten Romania. They have advanced beyond the group in their last two Euros and are consistent performers.

Group B

There are a couple of shouts for “Group of Death”, but this is our personal pick. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that it’s the archetypical Group of Death.

You have three of the best teams in the one group, two of which have won multiple World and European titles in the last couple of decades while the third has consistently run deep. The icing on the cake is that one of those is the reigning champion while the obligatory outsider breezed through qualifying and has been in excellent form.

There should be some very interesting Euro 2024 match betting options here, especially as it gets to the final days and everything is on the line. But the real excitement will be in those Euro 2024 outright betting markets.

  • Spain: The Spanish team have won the European Championship on three previous occasions (the joint highest with Germany), including two successive titles in 2008 and 2012. They qualified top of their group ahead of Scotland.
  • Croatia: Croatia are on a bit of a roll in major tournaments. Everyone’s favourite dark horse finished third in the 2022 World Cup and second in the 2018 World Cup while making it to the Round of 16 in the last 2 Euros. They qualified ahead of Wales and behind Türkiye.
  • Italy: Although they are the reigning champions, Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup shortly after their 2020 Euros win. In fact, as Euro 2020 was delayed until the summer of 2021, Gli Azzurri’s loss in a World Cup playoff qualifier against North Macedonia came just 8 months after their success in the Euro final against England.
  • Albania: The Albanian national team topped their European Championship Qualifying group ahead of Poland and Czechia, but they will enter this tournament as one of the rank outsiders. With three heavy hitters to face in the group stage, anything but the wooden spoon would be an achievement for the Red and Blacks.

Group C

England are clear favourites here and seem to have been handed a somewhat soft group, especially if we compare it to Italy, their opponents in the Euro 2020 final.

Expectations will be high in England, but it always is. They went undefeated in qualifying, despite facing challenges from Ukraine and Italy, and have gone deep in the last few major tournaments. But there are questions about consistency against the big teams, and you have to beat the big boys if you’re going to win tournaments like this one.

It's anyone’s guess for second place. Many Danes will still fondly remember their victory in 1992 when they shocked the continent in one of the tournament’s biggest ever upsets. They will have their eyes on that second spot and maybe even an upset against England, but it could go to Serbia or Slovenia, with the latter in excellent form..

You’d think it would be a battle of second, but if England lose or draw their opener, it will throw a huge spanner in the works.

  • Slovenia: Slovenia finished second to Denmark in their qualifying group and will be facing them again in the finals. Their form has been consistent and while they won’t be anyone’s favourites, they could a good outside bet on the Euro 2024 outright betting markets.
  • Denmark: Despite not qualifying in 2008 and 2016 and not making it out of the group stage in 2012, Denmark made it to the semi-finals in 2020 and will be hoping for a similar performance here. They topped their qualifying group but didn’t face any major challenges, and there’s still a degree of uncertainty about them.
  • Serbia: Serbia have won just 4 of their last 10 games, and none of those wins were against sides that will appear at the Euros. They did qualify automatically, but there will be some serious questions about their ability to challenge for a knockout place.
  • England: England have been on some big unbeaten runs over the last few years and have fared well on the big stage, but they have seemingly struggled against big teams and there are some other blips on their record that will concern fans. These include 2 losses against Hungary a couple of years ago and recent lacklustre performances against Brazil and Belgium.

Group D

This is the only other viable option for “Group of Death”. It is an equally tough group with some world beaters. However, Poland are not the consistent performers they once were and made it through by the skin of their teeth. Austria rarely perform well in finals, and while the Netherlands have a better squad than in recent tournaments, they are still not a patch on the team they once were.

This is all about France, and it’s hard to see them not cruising through.

  • Poland: Qualified via the playoffs with a win on penalties over Wales. They are usually a threat in qualifying and the finals themselves, but they finished third in their group and only made it through to the playoffs by a single point.
  • Netherlands: The Netherlands had Ireland, Greece, and France to contend with during qualifying, but still made it through in the automatic qualifying places.
  • Austria: Despite facing a qualifying group that included both Belgium and Sweden, Austria made it through with relative ease, finishing 1 point behind Belgium and a comfortable 9 ahead of Sweden. Then again, Austria usually shine in qualifying. It’s whether they can take that form to the finals that matters.
  • France: Despite some excellent recent showings in the FIFA World Cup, France have only made it beyond the quarters in the Euros once in the last 5 tournaments. They topped their qualifying group though, finishing ahead of Greece, Ireland, and the Netherlands and only dropping 2 points.

Group E

Although the Belgian golden generation seems to have passed without a trophy, there is still some world class quality in this team and you’d think they can beat anyone on their day. They have a relatively easy start to proceedings and are the clear group favourites, but that could work against them and make them complacent by the time they hit the knockout stages and go up against the big boys.

  • Belgium: Romelu Lukaku hit a record 14 goals during a relatively easy qualifying process for Belgium. They won 6, drew 2, and didn’t lose. They didn’t exactly set the world light with their March 2024 friendlies, recording draws against England and Ireland, but the Red Devils are always a threat in major tournaments.
  • Slovakia: Slovakia were placed in a qualifying group with Portugal and essentially fought it out for second place with Iceland, Bosnia, and surprise-package Luxembourg (who finished third). They won 7 games and earned their spot well.
  • Romania: The Romanians didn’t lose a single game in qualifying and they have been consistent in friendlies too. If you’re thinking about placing some wagers on the Euro 2024 outright betting market, remember that Romania have always had a reputation for qualifying well but not necessarily stepping up during the finals.
  • Ukraine: Ukraine qualified via the playoffs by beating Iceland. They will likely have the support of many neutrals, and there could be more than a few Euro 2024 futures betting markets created in their honour.

Group F

All eyes will be on Portugal, who aced qualifying and will take a very strong and supremely talented squad to Germany. They will face a challenge from Czechia and Türkiye, though. And don’t write off Georgia, not with the possibility of advancing by a third-place finish. They are going there to compete and will want to leave their mark.

  • Türkiye: Despite a few surprise losses in 2023 and 2024 friendlies, including a loss to Japan and a heavy defeat against Austria, Türkiye were excellent in qualifying, getting one up on both Wales and Croatia.
  • Georgia: Georgia are playing in their first European Champions tournament after qualifying via the playoffs by beating Greece on penalties.
  • Portugal: Portugal’s qualifying record was flawless. They played 10, won 10, scored 36 goals, and conceded only 2. They did have it easier than others, though, with Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia, and Liechtenstein making up their group.
  • Czechia: Czechia made it to the final of this competition back in 1996, and they were one of the teams beaten by shock winners Greece in 2004, making it to the semi-finals. They are not the same force they once were, but they’re always a threat. They made it through qualifying in second place, ahead of Poland and behind Albania on goal difference.
