It seems like only yesterday when we were watching Italy lift the European Championship trophy after defeating England at Wembley, but the next one is just around the corner.
Euro 2024 will kick off on June 14th, with millions of football fans from across Europe descending on Germany for the 17th iteration of this UEFA competition. To get you in the mood and keep you informed throughout, we’ve put together a Euro 2024 betting guide, covering everything from the teams and groups to the games and players. You can even collect some Euro 2024 betting offers on the way.
So, stay sharp, keep your eyes peeled for those Euro 2024 betting promotions, and let’s look at what we can expect from this summer’s blockbuster football tournament!
The UEFA European Football Championships, or just “Euros”, was first held in 1960, becoming the first major pan-European international football tournament. Although it’s now a mainstay on the football calendar, it wasn’t as widely welcomed back then, with England, Italy, and a few other major countries voting against its creation.
The tournament was held in France and saw 17 teams enter, with 4 making it to the finals in France, and the Soviet Union triumphing. Spain hosted and won the next one and Italy repeated the feat 4 years later. By this time, the continent was beginning to get behind the tournament and it expanded to 8 teams in 1990 before jumping to 16 in time for Euro 1996 in England.
Another couple of groups were added in 2016, making up 24 teams in total.
The tournament’s 24 teams will play in 6 groups of 4 teams:
The top two teams in each group advance to a knockout stage along with 4 of the highest-ranked third-place finishers.
The third-place finishers rule means that group winners don’t always play runners-up in the first game of the Round of 16. Most winners are drawn against qualifying third-place finishers while many runners-up play each other.
If you’re doing your Euro 2024 betting analysis, there are a few key dates to keep in mind:
As always, there is no third-place playoff at Euro 2024.
Many Euro 2024 betting specials revolve around the group stage—who will win, who will qualify, who will finish bottom, who will score the most points? It’s also where the tournament’s best strikers get a chance to build their tallies, as there is usually at least one underdog with a weak defence that lets them run riot.
So, if you have your eye on Euro 2024 top scorer betting or even just some general Euro 2024 group stage betting, this is where the action is.
If you're looking for some good Euro 2024 odds on a potential dark horse, it's worth looking at Hungary. Switzerland are always a good shout as well. Both of these teams will fancy their chances of qualifying from the group, not only because they are fairly evenly balanced, but they will also rate their chances of beating Germany, a team that have struggled of late.
Germany will still begin the tournament as favourites, and you'd expect them to top the group, but you only need to look back at their capitulation during the 2022 and 2018 World Cups to realise that anything can happen.
There are a couple of shouts for “Group of Death”, but this is our personal pick. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that it’s the archetypical Group of Death.
You have three of the best teams in the one group, two of which have won multiple World and European titles in the last couple of decades while the third has consistently run deep. The icing on the cake is that one of those is the reigning champion while the obligatory outsider breezed through qualifying and has been in excellent form.
There should be some very interesting Euro 2024 match betting options here, especially as it gets to the final days and everything is on the line. But the real excitement will be in those Euro 2024 outright betting markets.
England are clear favourites here and seem to have been handed a somewhat soft group, especially if we compare it to Italy, their opponents in the Euro 2020 final.
Expectations will be high in England, but it always is. They went undefeated in qualifying, despite facing challenges from Ukraine and Italy, and have gone deep in the last few major tournaments. But there are questions about consistency against the big teams, and you have to beat the big boys if you’re going to win tournaments like this one.
It's anyone’s guess for second place. Many Danes will still fondly remember their victory in 1992 when they shocked the continent in one of the tournament’s biggest ever upsets. They will have their eyes on that second spot and maybe even an upset against England, but it could go to Serbia or Slovenia, with the latter in excellent form..
You’d think it would be a battle of second, but if England lose or draw their opener, it will throw a huge spanner in the works.
This is the only other viable option for “Group of Death”. It is an equally tough group with some world beaters. However, Poland are not the consistent performers they once were and made it through by the skin of their teeth. Austria rarely perform well in finals, and while the Netherlands have a better squad than in recent tournaments, they are still not a patch on the team they once were.
This is all about France, and it’s hard to see them not cruising through.
Although the Belgian golden generation seems to have passed without a trophy, there is still some world class quality in this team and you’d think they can beat anyone on their day. They have a relatively easy start to proceedings and are the clear group favourites, but that could work against them and make them complacent by the time they hit the knockout stages and go up against the big boys.
All eyes will be on Portugal, who aced qualifying and will take a very strong and supremely talented squad to Germany. They will face a challenge from Czechia and Türkiye, though. And don’t write off Georgia, not with the possibility of advancing by a third-place finish. They are going there to compete and will want to leave their mark.
