The World Cup 2022 kicks off in mid-November 2022. This will be the first time for any Arab nation to host this premier football event.
What's special about this World Cup is that this is the last time thirty-two teams will be playing in this event. In 2026, this number will go up to forty-eight.
What we know so far is that Qatar is definitely playing in the 2022 World Cup as the host nation. At the time of writing, 13 other teams have also qualified for this event. They are:
Germany
Denmark
France
Belgium
Croatia
Spain
Serbia
England
Netherlands
Brazil
Argentina
Iran
South Korea
As we can see, all the top teams including all the previous champions, have already qualified.
The final total of thirty-two teams will be divided into eight groups, each comprising four teams. In this article, we'll focus on group B.
All the matches in Group B will take place in four different stadiums. These are:
Al Bayt Stadium
Khalifa International Stadium
Al Thumama Stadium
Ahmed bin Ali Stadium
The first two matches of this Group will be played on November 21. On that day, B1 takes on B2, while B3 takes on B4.
On 25 November, B1 clashes with B3, while B2 and B4 fight it out against each other.
B4 and B1 lock horns with each other on November 29. The same day, the two remaining teams — B3 and B2 — take each other on.
The two top teams in Group B will advance to the knockout stage.
Points will be awarded on the following criteria:
Played
Won
Lost
Drawn
Goals For
Goals Against
Goal Difference
The runner-up in Group B will play against the winner of Group A on December 3. Then on December 4, the Group B winner will play against the Group A runner-up. These matches will be played at the Al Khalifa and Al Khor stadium, respectively.
The winning team from each of these knock-out matches advances to the quarter-finals, which start on December 9.
Although we don't have the names of the Group B players yet, we will soon, as the draw is scheduled to take place in April. Once the draw is over, we will update the match details along with our odds.
The Al Bayt stadium at Al Khor can host more than 60,000 people and is the largest venue in this World Cup. Seating capacities of other stadia vary from 40,000 to 47,000.
Brazil has won the World Cup the most times. They lifted the Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
Germany has won the World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014). While France and Argentina have won the Cup twice, England and Spain have won only once.
The Netherlands have been thrice unlucky to win this coveted tournament. The Dutch were runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
The World Cup has seen some of the greatest matches. It's hard to pick out past winners from Group B, as the format has changed over the years. Keeping that in mind, here are two nail-biting contests.
Brazil went into the tournament as World Cup favourites. In their run to the finals, Brazil defeated Sweden and Spain 7-1 and 6-1, respectively. Their next match was against Uruguay, and all Brazil needed was a draw to win the World Cup.
Early in the match, Brazil scored the first goal. The 200,000-strong crowd in Rio was egging on its national heroes. Everybody thought Brazil had this match in its pocket.
But tragedy struck Pele and his men in the last 25 minutes. Two quick goals by the Uruguayans sealed the match in their favour. Pele was heartbroken and burst into tears, but he would go on to win the next three World Cups for his team.
This was an epic game in which Diego Maradona created history twice within four minutes.
First, he created the Hand of God moment and scored the first goal against England. Four minutes later, Maradona dribbled past five England defenders and landed the winning goal. The match was over for England, who tried to salvage the match with a late goal by Gary Lineker.
Once the final draws take place in April we will update the website accordingly as soon as we know the group stage teams.
