Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)

The governing body of the women’s professional tennis circuits, the WTA includes nine WTA 1000 events, 13 WTA 500 events and 38 WTA 250 events in 2021. The WTA finals are held in Shenzhen, China in November.

Serena Williams long dominated the WTA, but there is a deep pool of challengers to the 39-year-old. Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, Japan’s Naomi Osaka and Romania’s Simona Halep are among the players to hold the No. 1 ranking in recent years.

Grand Slams

There are four Grand Slam tournaments each year. The Australian Open is contested in January, the French Open begins in May, followed by Wimbledon in July and the U.S. Open in August.

The Australian Open and U.S. Open are played on hard-court surfaces while the French Open is played on clay and Wimbledon on grass. It is important to know the strengths of various players on the different surfaces.

In Grand Slam events, the men play best-of-five set matches while the women play best-of-three.

Olympics

Tennis was first contested as an Olympic event in the inaugural Modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. The sport was not included in the Olympics between 1928-1984 but  as a medal sport in 1988.

Andy Murray is the only men’s player to have won two gold medal singles titles, while Venus Williams holds the women’s record with four.

Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men’s tennis. It features competing countries in a knock-out format and is known as the “World Cup of Tennis.”

The United States holds the record with 32 Davis Cup titles, followed by 29 for Australia. The Davis Cup is one of the most popular Tennis betting events due to its huge popularity and large following.

Billie Jean Cup

The women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup, the Billie Jean Cup was initially launched as the Federation Cup. The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995 and then to the Billie Jean Cup in 2020 in honor of the former top-ranked player.

The United States has won the event 18 times, but the Czech Republic has dominated the event of late with six of the country’s 11 titles coming since 2011.
